Enacted as part of the Education Amendments of 1972, Title IX is the name most commonly used to refer to federal civil rights law in the U.S. that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or other education program that receives federal funding. Over its 50 years, Title IX has most often been applied to equitable sporting opportunities for men and women, but over the past two decades has also been seen as a protection against campus sexual violence.
