Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. Leadership Award

Recognizing Excellence in Education

The Hunt Institute is proud to announce the establishment of the Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. Leadership Award, which will be presented at The Institute’s Early Childhood Leadership Summit annually, beginning in 2026. This distinguished award will honor exemplary senior-level state leaders or state agencies that have made exceptional contributions to improving outcomes for all learners in their states.

The award recognizes the lasting impact of Governor Hunt, the four-term Governor of North Carolina and founder of The Hunt Institute. Widely regarded as one of the nation’s most influential education leaders and appropriately named the Education Governor, Governor Hunt has dedicated his career to strengthening public schools, elevating the teaching profession, and expanding opportunities for children and families. He served as North Carolina’s lieutenant governor from 1973–1977 and as governor from 1977–1985 and again from 1993–2001.

Governor Hunt’s leadership reshaped North Carolina’s education landscape and set a national standard for excellence across the full education continuum through his First in America initiative, a statewide effort to ensure North Carolina would lead the nation in educational achievement and his signature Smart Start initiative which started in North Carolina, and has since been replicated across the country and remains a model for how states can invest in young children to drive long-term educational and economic success.

Through this award, The Hunt Institute seeks to honor leaders who embody Governor Hunt’s unwavering belief that every child deserves a strong start and a high-quality public education, and who lead through innovation, bipartisanship, and service.
