Hunt State Policy Fellows

Inspiring Thoughtful Policy

The Hunt State Policy Fellows program develops elected officials and policymakers into education-focused leaders. This bipartisan program, named for renowned education governor Jim Hunt (D-NC | 1977-1985; 1993- 2001), equips local leaders in North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina with critical insights into the challenges and opportunities in education and the spark needed to develop thoughtful policy positions.

Each group of Hunt State Policy Fellows brings together a passionate team of local leaders who are ready to dive into the challenges of education policy.

Modeled after our flagship Hunt-Kean Leadership Fellows, Hunt State Policy Fellows gathers state-level leaders, including county commissioners, school board members, mayors, city councilors, advocates, and other community leaders.

We pull Fellows from a wide variety of professional roles who have one thing in common: They aspire to improve education policy throughout their political careers.

North Carolina

North Carolina

Launched in 2021, the North Carolina Hunt State Policy Fellows program was the first of its kind and has since become a model for similar efforts in other states.

Now in its fifth cohort, the program has supported over 100 local leaders—including county commissioners, school board members, mayors, and city councilors—in building a strong foundation in education policy. From May through September, Fellows join three two-day sessions focused on early childhood, K-12, and higher education.

With a longer track record than newer programs like Virginia’s, North Carolina’s Fellows benefit from a tested approach that blends expert insight, peer learning, and real-world policy application.

Virginia

Virginia

Launched in 2025, the Virginia Hunt State Policy Fellows program brings together a bipartisan group of local elected officials and community leaders to explore key education issues across the Commonwealth.

Modeled after our North Carolina program, this inaugural cohort includes county supervisors, school board members, mayors, and city council members.

From April to August, Fellows meet for three in-person sessions focused on early childhood, K-12, and higher education. Through expert-led discussions and peer learning, the program helps Fellows build knowledge, form connections, and grow as education leaders.

South Carolina

South Carolina

Launching Fall 2025, the South Carolina Hunt State Policy Fellows program will bring together a bipartisan group of local leaders to focus on key education issues across the state.

Modeled after our work in North Carolina and Virginia, the program will include three in-person sessions on early childhood, K-12, and higher education. Fellows will learn from experts, share ideas, and build the skills needed to shape effective education policy in their communities.

Throughout this five-month immersion program, future education policymakers and aspiring state and elected officials will receive access to the resources, space, and expertise needed to develop thoughtful positions on a variety of education policy issues.

The bipartisan Fellows program:

  • Works with officials early on in their careers to ensure education remains a consistent focus throughout their time in the policymaking space.
  • Helps Fellows navigate the ever-changing education landscape and prepare them to work across the aisle to improve outcomes for all of their state’s students.
  • Engages Fellows in constructive dialogue around leadership in the public policy landscape, building consensus across parties, and navigating competing agendas.

By investing in education leaders and aspiring local and state policymakers, we are creating a pipeline of informed education leaders, beginning at the municipal and county levels and on to state and national elected office.
