In recognition of World Mental Health Day and Mental Illness Awareness Week in October, it is critical to understand the unique mental health risks that youth of color face. Recent research has shown that suicide rates are associated with adverse childhood experiences and socio-economic factors that largely affect people of color. Many of the risk factors among youth of color are not addressed in suicide prevention strategies, most notably the effects of structural racism on the mental health of racially marginalized communities. Furthermore, the lack of racial, ethnic, and linguistic diversity in psychologists and the critical shortage of mental health professionals in schools create significant barriers for students to receive beneficial and culturally competent care.

Join The Hunt Institute on Tuesday, October 31st, at 2 PM EST for a #RaceAndEducation webinar where experts will dive further into the suicide risk factors for youth of color, policy recommendations to address shortages in our mental healthcare system, and best practices for schools, peers, families, and mentors to assist youth of color in their lives who are struggling.
