The State of Higher Education Funding: Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)

October 10, 2022

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are vital to higher education. Yet, many land-grant HBCUs have received lower levels of funding since their inception. Over the past few decades, in fact, inequity in land-grant university funding has resulted in HBCUs missing out on $12.8 billion in funding across the country. Utilize the interactive map below to view amounts of underfunding across HBCUs.

In The Hunt Institute’s newest brief written with support from Lumina Foundation, we take a deep dive into the history of HBCUs, the underfunding of land-grant universities, and federal accountability.

The State of Higher Education Funding: Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” is the first of a three-part series on the historical disinvestment of HBCUs. The next two briefs, which will be released by end of year, will dive into state examples of rectifying state disinvestment of HBCUs.
