The Intersection Webinar Recap: Accountability for School Improvement and College and Career Readiness

Our thanks to Kim Anderson, Senior Policy Researcher at the Southern Regional Education Board. SREB’s recent report Accountability for School Improvement and College and Career Readiness covers findings on accountability for college and career readiness as articulated in approved state ESSA plans as well as regional trends that shows 5 ways states prioritize readiness. Including insights that highlight professional learning recommendations for educators and how states foster alignment of instructional materials.

Key Takeaways:

• The Southern Regional Education Board collaborated with their sixteen member states to evaluate trends, best practices, and actions related to the inclusion of college and career readiness standards in state ESSA plans.
• Five states exceeded ESSA’s requirement to include long-term statewide goals for academic achievement by including an additional goal specifically targeting college and career readiness. These goals ranged from a percentage of high school graduates determined to be college and career ready (Alabama, South Carolina) to postsecondary attainment goals (Texas, Tennessee).
• Four states included readiness measures from across the education continuum as part of the academic achievement indicator used to measure progress year to year, including progress towards readiness at graduation, demonstrated readiness at graduation, and transitions to postsecondary education and employment after graduation.
