Teacher Workforce Diversity: Why It Matters for Student Outcomes

November 16, 2022

In North Carolina, student populations are becoming more and more racially and ethnically diverse, while educator diversity lags behind. When research has clearly shown that a diverse teacher workforce positively impacts achievement of all students, particularly students of color, this diversity gap presents a barrier to improving student outcomes.

So, how do we address this issue? The Hunt Institute has partnered with Dr. Kisha N. Daniels, Assistant Professor of the Practice of Education at Duke University again on her second policy brief examining challenges and solutions to the diversity gap. While the first brief focused on Identifying Barriers to Recruiting and Retaining a Diverse Teacher Workforce, this brief examines broader impacts and recommendations of next steps for the state.
