Secretary Duncan Talks About the Many Influences in His Life and Doesn’t Hold Back on Current Affairs

Cary, NC – The Hunt Institute is pleased to announce the release of the latest episode of its podcast series As Yet Untold, featuring an interview between former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and The Institute’s President & CEO, Dr. Javaid Siddiqi.

The podcast was created to provide an outlet for public figures to share a more personal side of themselves, away from the political spotlight. As the name implies, the hope is that each guest takes the opportunity to reveal something they haven’t shared to a wide audience before.

During the conversation, Secretary Duncan shares how he was influenced to follow a career in education from his earliest years, as his mother ran an after school child care center in Chicago where he spent much of his time. The children in his mother’s charge were predominantly Black, which also helped him understand the issue of equity from an early age. Dr. Siddiqi and Secretary Duncan also speak about his time serving as U.S. Secretary of Education under President Obama, and in a more lighthearted moment, his time playing professional basketball in Australia.

“Secretary Duncan has been a great friend of The Hunt Institute and participant in our programs for many years, thanks to his strong relationship with Governor Hunt,” said Dr. Siddiqi. “It was a real pleasure to have the opportunity to dive into aspects of his life not traditionally on the agenda during those meetings, and I always appreciate his candor on any number of issues.”

“I have a great affection for Governor Hunt, and by extension The Hunt Institute as well,” said Secretary Duncan. “I always enjoy having the chance to support initiatives by The Institute, and very much appreciated the invitation.”

Episodes of As Yet Untold are currently slated to release the first Tuesday of each month, and the June guest will be Karol Mason, President of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
