Quote from Gov. Jim Hunt on Common Core State Standards Release
March 10, 2010
Statement from James B. Hunt, Jr., Chairman of the Hunt Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy and former governor of North Carolina on the official public release of the K-12 Common Core State Standards by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers:
“In education, there is no stronger imperative than preparing all students for success in college and work. As a former governor, I can attest to the power of high quality, consistent standards in helping our young people succeed. The draft Common Core State Standards released today provide a critical opportunity for students, parents, and teachers to be on the same page, working together to ensure that students graduate from school prepared to succeed in college and their careers.
“Today, education standards vary widely across the country – and that hurts our chances of giving our young people the knowledge and skills they need to be successful. Achieving true, systemic education reform is a process. Giving education leaders an opportunity to share a set of consistent, high-quality standards is an important step in that process, and I commend the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers for their outstanding work.”
